How Long Does It Take to Get to Auckland Airport?
Auckland Airport is located in South Auckland, in the suburb of Manukau. The airport is 13 miles (21 km) south of Auckland’s central business district. If going by car, the travel time is typically around 30 to 45 minutes but can vary depending on traffic conditions.
If you’re taking public transit, the length of travel time can be anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Always allow plenty of time to get to the airport prior to your departure.
Getting Between Terminals
Auckland Airport is made up of two terminals—International and Domestic—in separate but adjacent buildings. The distance between them is relatively short, with a free shuttle bus operating every 15 minutes between them. The bus runs from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm daily. From the International terminal, the bus departs from the forecourt outside of Door 8; with the Domestic terminal, it leaves outside of Door 2 at bus stop C.
As another option, passengers can get to either terminal via an inter-terminal walkway between the two buildings. The walkway, designated by a green line painted on the footpath, takes 10 minutes depending on your speed and the busyness of the terminal.
If taking a domestic flight after arriving from an overseas one, allow yourself around three hours to cover procedures for entry into New Zealand, as well as any unexpected flight or processing delays.
Getting to and From Auckland Airport
From private transfer to public transit, there are many options for getting to and from Auckland Airport, including shuttle, taxi, and rideshare services.
Taxis
Heading to Auckland international airport? All taxi and shuttle companies are able to drop you off there. However, when leaving the airport, only airport-licensed companies can do pick-ups from the designated ranks at the terminal buildings. They are: Alert Taxis, Auckland Co-op Taxis, Cheap Cabs and Corporate Cabs.
These cab companies are located outside the arrivals areas, at Door 8 in the international terminal and outside of Door 4 in the domestic terminal. Depending upon the company, taxi fares from the airport into the city range between NZ$45 to $90. The airport charge of $5 per pick up and $3 per drop off is inclusive in the fixed fare rate.
Shuttle options include Super Shuttle, which provides door-to-door service, and SkyDrive, which offers an express shuttle service between Auckland Airport and SkyCity in Central Auckland.
Public Transit
When using public transport, the Auckland Transport’s online Journey Planner can help with getting to and from the airport in terms of providing times, fares, and maps for trips.
Two bus routes service the Auckland Airport. The AirportLink bus goes between the airport, Puhinui Station and Manukau Bus Station. It’s about 18 to 20 minutes from Puhinui Station to the airport’s international terminal and about 13 to 17 minutes to the domestic terminal.
The 38 bus service runs between the airport and the Auckland suburb of Onehunga to Mangere Town Centre. It operates every 15 to 20 minutes daily.
You’ll need to purchase an AT HOP card, a prepaid and reusable smart card for use on trains, buses, and ferries around Auckland. Seniors can purchase what’s known as the gold AT HOP card, a key tag loaded with a SuperGold public transport concession.
This type of card permits seniors to travel for free on trains and selected bus and ferry services in Auckland, after 9:00 am weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays. The card usually costs NZ$11 and can be purchased from various locations, including retailers.
Hotel Transfers
Some Auckland hotels offer an airport shuttle. The Yellow Bus provides pickup and drop-off transfers from Auckland Airport to partner hotels, including the Holiday Inn Auckland Airport and Naumi Auckland Airport. A one-way is priced at NZ$8 and a roundtrip costs $16.
Jetpark Auckland Airport Hotel and Auckland Airport Lodge offer complimentary direct airport transfers. Advanced booking is required.
Parking and Car Rentals
Both the International Terminal and Domestic Terminal at Auckland Airport have parking options. You can book parking in advance via the airport, with pricing based upon your dates of arrival and departure. Autopay Machines are located on pedestrian access ways at the Domestic Terminal and in the outer forecourt area at the International Terminal.
Economy parking is the most affordable option and available at both terminals. There are three car-park options, one in International and the other two in Domestic, each no more than a 10-minute walk to the terminals. There’s also a Park & Ride option, with free daily bus service that runs every 10 minutes.
Standard Parking consists of one car park (Car Park D) near the International Terminal, with covered and uncovered areas. It’s a seven- to 10-minute walk to the terminal.
Near the Domestic Terminal, there are two car parks, one with both covered and uncovered parking (Car Park M) and the other with only uncovered parking (Car Park O). Car Park M is the closest to the terminal and Air New Zealand’s check-in.
Executive Parking offers features including valet parking at both terminals and wider parking bays at the Domestic Terminal’s Car Park R. There’s also separate Valet Parking and Short-Term Parking. Park & Ride goes to the airport’s short-term and long-term parking lots.
Both airport terminals have rental-car service areas. It may be possible to rent a car on-site based upon vehicle availability, but it’s recommended to book a rental in advance. Companies include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Ezi Car Rentals, Hertz, and Thrifty.
