Tourist visas are constantly evolving and changing to meet the needs of modern travelers and a fast-paced, interconnected world. Whereas it used to take weeks to months to process, now most travelers can get tourist visas within days or minutes. Some countries have even eliminated tourist visas for official passport holders to make visiting more accessible and straightforward.

If you’re planning a trip to Tanzania, you may be wondering if you can get an electronic travel authorization or a visa on arrival—or visit without needing to get a tourist visa at all. We’ve got the answers you’re looking for about visa-free entry to Tanzania.

Can I Travel to Tanzania Without a Visa?

Not if you’re a US citizen. Whether it’s a multiple-entry visa or a regular visa, US travelers will need to have a valid visa  in order to enter Tanzania. It’s possible to get a visa in advance of your trip or get a visa upon arrival.

Some countries, however, are allowed visa-free travel to Tanzania for a set amount of time. Non–US citizens should check their respective nation’s visa regulations to determine the relevant entry requirements.

Which Countries Don’t Need Visas for Tanzania?

Tanzania has a visa-waiver policy in place for citizens of roughly 70 countries, who are permitted to travel visa-free to Tanzania for short visits of up to 90 days (three months). For stays longer than three months, these visitors will need to apply for visitor visas as well.

Many of Tanzania’s visa-free countries include neighboring East African nations, like Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, as well as other countries elsewhere on the African continent. Other visa-exempt countries include Singapore and the Seychelles.

Tanzania passport holders and nationals can also enter the country without a visa.

Tanzania Visa on Arrival

It is possible for some foreign travelers, including those from the US, to get a visa on arrival in Tanzania. However, it’s highly recommended to get your visa before arrival to avoid waiting. It costs US$100 to purchase a visa upon arrival from an immigration officer.
