How Long Does It Take to Get to Melbourne Airport?
Located roughly 14 miles from the Melbourne Central Business District, it’s about a 25-minute drive on the Tullamarine Freeway to reach Melbourne Airport.
Getting Between Terminals
No need to hop on an inter-terminal shuttle, train, or other ground transportation at Melbourne Airport. All four terminals are located in the same building for easy connectivity. However, the terminals are situated far apart from each other, so it can be a long walk to get to your desired terminal and gate.
Getting to and from Melbourne Airport
From budget-friendly transport options, like buses, to efficient rideshares that go on your schedule, you have plenty of options for airport transfers to Melbourne city proper. Here are a few of your choices.
Taxis
For fast and easy access to Melbourne, you can prebook a taxi at Melbourne Airport. You can also hail a cab at the taxi stands outside Terminals One and Four.
Rates vary depending on your destination and traffic conditions, but are usually between AU$60 and $70. A Melbourne Airport access fee of AU$4.78 is also charged to every airport taxi pick-up, but this fee is included in your overall taxi fare.
Public Transit
If you’re not taking a private car, there’s also mass transit to and from Melbourne Airport.
For direct bus access with minimal waiting time, the SkyBus is the best option. Running from 4:00 am to 1:00 am every day, SkyBus provides express bus service from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne CBD to the airport. It stops at Terminals One, Three, and Four at a frequency that varies from 10 to 15 minutes depending on the time of day. One-way adult fares cost AU$22, and return fares are AU$34. You can purchase SkyBus tickets at the airport or online.
Public buses from Public Transit Victoria also connect the airport and city, with pickup on the ground floor of Terminal Four’s parking garage. However, these routes are not direct to the city center, and fares vary depending on your final destination. For express and affordable access to central Melbourne, SkyBus is the best choice.
Hotel Transfers
If you’re staying at one of the five hotels close to Melbourne Airport, catch the corresponding shuttle buses in the pickup and drop-off area in front of Terminals One, Two, and Three.
Parking and Car Rentals
Melbourne Airport offers a variety of parking options depending on your needs, and you can book online in advance to skip the hassle of looking for a parking spot.
For quick access to all four terminals, park in the undercover Terminal Car Parks. It’s only a three-minute walk to the terminals, and rates start at AU$49 per day. For shorter- or longer-term parking on a budget, convenience parking lots further away start at AU$12 per day. A 24/7 complimentary shuttle runs every 15 minutes from the lot to the main terminal building.
Valet and business parking are also available at premium rates starting at AU$79 per day.
Hertz, Enterprise, Budget, Avis, Europcar, and Sixt all offer car rentals from Melbourne Airport. You can find their desks on the ground floor of the parking structure directly opposite the main terminal building (the Terminal One, Two & Three parking structure).
