COVID-19

Current COVID-19 Restrictions: None

Say goodbye to needing a negative pre-departure test, meeting quarantine requirements, or needing to download a new smartphone app for your COVID-19 vaccine information.

As of July 6, 2022, the Australian Border Force has removed all COVID-19 requirements for most foreign travelers. That means you don’t need to:

  • Provide proof of vaccination status
  • Provide a negative COVID-19 test
  • Wear masks on international flights

However, COVID-19 safety measures are still recommended, including wearing masks and social distancing. It’s also recommended that you purchase comprehensive travel insurance for your trip in case you incur any unexpected overseas medical costs.

For travelers from China, Hong Kong, and Macau, Australia lifted its COVID-19 pre-departure testing requirement on March 11, 2023.

Health and Safety Warnings

The US Department of State has issued a Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions travel advisory for Australia, its lowest travel-advisory level. If you’re visiting Australia from countries other than the United States, check also to see if your home country has a travel advisory for Australia travel.

Apart from its dangerous wildlife, like sharks and poisonous spiders, Australia is a very safe country to visit . Violent crime, terrorism, and armed conflicts are extremely rare here, although in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne, you should be wary of petty crimes like pickpocketing.

Even though Australia is safe, you should always take the following safety precautions while traveling abroad:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings
  • Follow local news and seek local advice
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary and how you can be reached with loved ones back at home
  • Know how to reach your country’s embassy in Australia
  • Don’t share detailed information about your itinerary or accommodations with strangers
