Health and Safety Warnings

Health and Safety Warnings
The US Department of State has issued a Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions travel advisory for American citizens in Cambodia, though advises travelers to exercise increased caution in certain areas. The advisory cites the risk of crime, landmines, and political instability as reasons for the increased caution.
There is also a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution alert in Phnom Penh due to crimes both petty and violent, from phone and bag snatching to sexual assault and homicide. There’s also a Level 2 advisory in remote areas of Siem Reap and other provinces due to unremoved land mines.
The US State Department advises against travel to high-risk areas as they may be unable to assist you in case of emergency. Review the State Department’s guide to traveling in high-risk areas for more information.
For up-to-date information about travel restrictions to Cambodia, check Entriva’s travel map, or with the US State Department and the US embassy in Cambodia. Consult the Cambodia Ministry of Health for health advisories and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for current recommendations regarding travel to Cambodia.
Here are some health issues travelers should be aware of when traveling in Cambodia:
Malaria: Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease that is present in Cambodia throughout the year. Travelers should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and sleeping under a mosquito net.
Diarrhea: Diarrhea is a common illness in Cambodia, and it can be caused by contaminated food or water. Travelers should be careful about what they eat and drink, and they should make sure to drink bottled water.
Rabies: Rabies is a serious viral disease that can be fatal if not treated. It is spread through the bite of an infected animal, such as a dog or bat. Travelers should avoid contact with stray animals, and they should seek medical attention immediately if they are bitten by an animal.
It is advisable to obtain international medical insurance to ensure that you’re covered while traveling in Cambodia. Most medical facilities in the country do accept insurance for medical treatment, and certain serious situations, like needing a medical evacuation, can be very expensive.

Women's Safety

Cambodia is a relatively safe country, but there are some safety issues that women travelers may face. These include:

  • Sexual harassment: Women travelers may be subject to unwanted attention or harassment, including catcalling, groping, and verbal abuse. It is important to be assertive and report any incidents to local police.
  • Assault: Sexual assault is a serious problem in Cambodia, and women travelers should be aware of the risk. It is important to take precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night, and to be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Cultural misunderstandings: Cambodia has a different culture than many Western countries, and there may be some cultural misunderstandings that could lead to problems for women travelers. For example, it is considered rude to refuse food or drink that is offered to you, and it is important to dress modestly in public.

What to Do in Case of Emergency

If you find yourself in an emergency situation while traveling in Cambodia, there are a few things you can do:

  • Stay calm and assess the situation.
  • If you are robbed or assaulted, report the incident to the police.
  • If you are lost or stranded, contact your embassy or consulate for assistance.
  • If you are injured or sick, seek medical attention immediately. Proceed with caution, though: According to the US State Department, it’s unlikely you’ll find medical facilities that meet international standards outside of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Medication purchased from local pharmacies can also be problematic—you could get something authentic, or you could get potentially lethal counterfeit drugs.

In major cities or rural areas, these are the emergency hotline numbers to commit to memory:

  • Police: 117
  • Fire: 118
  • Ambulance: 119
  • American Embassy: +855-23-728-000

It is also a good idea to have a copy of your travel documents—passport, visa, and travel insurance information—with you at all times. This will make it easier for you to get help if you need it.

If you wind up in trouble in Cambodia, reach out to your country’s embassy for consular assistance, whether you’re a victim of violent crime or natural disasters. American travelers can also enroll in the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Signing up delivers travel alerts right to your phone or email, and it makes it easier for local authorities to find and contact you in case of emergency.
