From documents to vaccinations, here’s everything you’ll need to show local authorities for international arrivals to Tanzania.
Each nation has its own unique entry and exit requirements, and Tanzania is no different. Bringing the right documentation not only protects you while traveling abroad, it also helps protect the people of the country you’re visiting.
Tanzania Travel Requirements: Know Before You Go
Tanzania Required Documents
- Passport: You’ll need to travel with a valid passport that has at least one blank page. It should also be valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel.
- Valid Visa: With a few exceptions, all foreign nationals are required to have a valid travel visa to enter Tanzania, whether it’s a Single or Multiple Entry visa. Luckily, Tanzania’s visa application process is fast, easy, and hassle-free. You can typically get a visa within 10 business days or get a tourist visa upon arrival in the country. In some cases, you can apply for a visa online or through the Tanzanian embassy in your country.
- Entry and Exit Forms: Required for all passengers arriving in Tanzania by air or sea.
Tanzania’s entry rules may vary by country. Confirm if there’s anything else you need to enter Tanzania by contacting Entriva , or your country’s Tanzanian embassy.
How do I obtain a Passport?
If you do not already have a passport, you can apply for one at your local passport office. The process typically takes four to six weeks, but it’s currently taking up to 16 weeks, so make sure to apply well in advance of your trip. If you already have a passport, make sure to check its expiration date and renew it if necessary.
To get a United States passport, an American citizen needs to follow these steps:
- Fill out form DS-11: The DS-11 form is available online or can be obtained at a passport acceptance facility.
- Gather required documents: You will need to provide proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate) and a government-issued ID (such as a driver’s license).
- Get a passport photo taken: Your photo must meet specific requirements, such as size, lighting, and positioning.
- Pay the application fee: The fee varies depending on the type of passport and processing time selected. The average processing time for a new passport is four to six weeks, but it can take up to 16 weeks. Expedited services are available for an additional cost.
- Submit your application in person: You can submit your application at a passport acceptance facility, which can be found at many post offices, courthouses, and libraries.
- Track your application status: You can check the status of your passport application online or by phone.
How Do I Obtain A Tanzania Visa?
You can obtain a visa by applying online through a visa service provider like Entriva, or through the Tanzanian government’s official website. The application process typically takes 10 business days, depending on the type of visa you are applying for. Make sure to apply for your visa well in advance of your trip to allow for processing time. US travelers can also obtain a visa upon arrival at their port of entry to Tanzania.
How Do I Obtain An Entry and Exit Form?
The entry declaration form can be downloaded here, or obtained on the plane or at the airport upon arrival in Tanzania. Make sure to fill it out completely and accurately, as it will be checked by immigration officials. Any exit paper can be obtained and completed at the airport prior to your departure.
Tanzania Health Requirements and Screenings
To keep yourself and the rest of the country healthy and safe, monitor local media ahead of your trip for any health-related issues, keep an eye on any Tanzania travel restrictions that may be developing, pay attention to your health post-arrival, and seek medical attention if need be. Perhaps most importantly, be aware of—and follow—Tanzania’s health requirements for entry.
COVID-19
COVID-19 Requirements: None.
While the Tanzanian government is not currently requiring those entering or transiting Tanzania or Zanzibar to present a certificate confirming COVID-19 vaccination or testing, enhanced screening protocols are still in place. Some travelers have reported requests to provide proof of vaccination upon arrival or a negative COVID-19 test if not vaccinated.
The COVID-19 pandemic may no longer be considered a public health emergency, but it is an ongoing global health issue, and restrictions and requirements are subject to change. Be sure to check for updates from the Tanzania government’s Ministry of Health or your nearest Tanzanian embassy.
Vaccinations
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued the following guidance regarding vaccinations and medication for US travelers to Tanzania:
- Recommended: Malaria, COVID-19, cholera, Hepatitis A and B, measles, rabies, typhoid
- Required: Yellow fever vaccination, if you’re coming from a known yellow fever–infected country or region
Prescriptions
If you need to bring prescription medication with you during your trip, you should:
- Check with a Tanzanian embassy or consulate to ensure that the drug is legal to bring into the country and you don’t violate local laws.
- Carry the medications in their original packing.
- Bring a copy of the prescription or a letter from your doctor.
- Declare your medications at customs.
- Bring extra in case a local pharmacy can’t fill your prescription.
Travel Insurance
While travel medical insurance isn’t required for entry to Tanzania, it’s never a bad idea to make sure you’re covered in case of emergencies. When shopping for a health insurance plan, confirm that coverage includes medical services, medical assistance, and care at reputable medical facilities in major cities; you may also want to opt for medical evacuation insurance, depending on your itinerary.
