Purposes of Embassies and Consulates

Embassies and consulates serve as the official diplomatic representation of a foreign government in a host country, representing their home country’s interests overseas—in this case, in Turkey. Just as Turkish citizens have access to Turkey’s laws and rights at the Turkish embassy in the US, American citizens have access to the rights and laws of the US at the American embassy in Turkey.

In addition to offering consular services, embassies and consulates serve as the face of their home country in matters of diplomacy and education. They also provide support to citizens living or traveling abroad, who can seek assistance with legal issues, lost passports, visas, and more.

Distinguishing Between Embassies and Consulates

Though they share some similarities, embassies and consulates serve different functions too. Embassies are typically located in the host country’s capital city, with the foreign country’s ambassador—the highest-ranking diplomat—at its head.

Consulates, on the other hand, can be found throughout the country, led by lower-ranking diplomats known as consuls. Consulates offer help with visas, engage with the local community on cultural and educational initiatives, and provide security and assistance in case of emergency.
